Friends & Family CPR Training
The Friends & Family CPR training at the Punta Gorda Safety Complex was a great success! Twenty-three PGIslanders filled the room, excited to learn.
After an introduction by Chief Holden Gibbs, Firefighter and Certified Trainer Steve Richardson and Fire Department Volunteer Wyatt proceeded with the training. Steve led us through the latest American Heart Association recommended Hands-Only CPR and the research behind the method. Each of us tried our compression skills on a special CPR training dummy that provided feedback on our technique. Many of us were surprised how difficult it was to perform 100 to 120 compressions per minute, the recommended rate for Hands-Only CPR! Steve also discussed pediatric CPR; this generated many questions since so many of us have grandchildren that visit. CPR training was followed by a discussion and exhibition of an AED device, a "Stop the Bleed" demonstration, and a discussion on choking and clearing the airway.
Everyone found the ninety-minute presentation informative and well worth the time. What a great service provided by our local fire department! In the City of Punta Gorda, the average response time after receiving a 911 call to being on site is four minutes. To have somebody at the scene start CPR immediately is crucial to the person surviving.
What a worthwhile way to spend a Wednesday morning! Thank you to all who attended.
